What "observed" means
When a federal holiday lands on a weekend, most federal employees get the nearest weekday off instead. A Saturday holiday is observed the Friday before, and a Sunday holiday the Monday after. In 2027 this happens three times: Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19, observed Friday, June 18), Independence Day (Sunday, July 4, observed Monday, July 5) and Christmas (Saturday, December 25, observed Friday, December 24).
The count
Of the eleven holidays, nine give a three-day weekend once the observed days are counted. The other two, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, fall on a Thursday. The longest stretch without a federal holiday runs from Washington's Birthday (February 15) to Memorial Day (May 31), about three and a half months. After that the holidays come close together from late May through early July.
