How these date tools work
All dates are worked out in your browser from your device's calendar day. Dates are counted as whole days at midnight, so a daylight saving change can never move an answer by an hour. The tools cover everyday questions: what day or week it is, how long until a date, what a date will be after some time, and when common holidays fall.
Week numbers explained
There is more than one way to number weeks. The ISO system, used across much of the world, starts weeks on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year. A year has 52 or 53 ISO weeks, and the first days of January can belong to the last week of the previous year. The US-style count used on many calendars starts weeks on Sunday, and week 1 is the week that contains January 1. The week number tool shows both.
Leap years
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100, unless they are also divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. The rule keeps the calendar close to the length of the solar year, about 365.2425 days on average.
Holidays that change each year
US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Labor Day the first Monday of September, and Memorial Day the last Monday of May. Daylight saving time in the United States starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. Western Easter is set by the spring full moon. The holiday pages show the date for any year you type.
Tips
- For work schedules, use the business days calculator, which skips Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays differ by country and employer, so remove them yourself.
- When adding months, the day is held at the end of a shorter month: January 31 plus one month is February 28, or 29 in a leap year.
