A fixed date

Christmas is on December 25, so the weekday shifts each year. It is a federal holiday in the United States, a status Congress gave it in 1870, and a public holiday in most countries. Some Orthodox churches celebrate on January 7 because they follow the Julian calendar.

Planning around the weekday

When Christmas falls on a weekend, the day off is often moved to the Friday before or the Monday after, depending on the country and the employer. December 24 and December 26 are also public holidays in many places, including Germany, where they are called the first and second Christmas days. Post and parcel deadlines for delivery by December 25 are usually set in the middle of the month.

2032October 31Sunday

2034October 31Tuesday
2035October 31Wednesday

A fixed date

Halloween is on October 31 every year, so only the day of the week changes: it moves forward one weekday each year, and two weekdays when a leap day falls in between. The name comes from All Hallows' Eve, the night before the Christian feast of All Saints on November 1. Many customs trace back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest.

Planning around the weekday

When Halloween is on a weekday, towns often hold trick-or-treating on the evening itself, and some move community events to the nearest weekend. Check your local schedule. Costumes, candy and decorations are cheapest in the weeks after, and the demand peaks in the last week of October.

The date

The Fourth of July marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. It is a federal holiday, and many cities hold parades, picnics and fireworks.

When July 4 is on a weekend

Federal employees get the nearest weekday off: the Friday before if July 4 is a Saturday, and the Monday after if it is a Sunday. Many private employers follow the same rule, but not all do. Fireworks displays are usually held on the evening of July 4 itself, or on the nearest weekend for community events, so check your local schedule.

The date

Juneteenth is June 19. It marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Texas made it a state holiday in 1980, and Congress made it a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

Planning around the weekday

Because the date is fixed, the weekday changes each year. When June 19 is on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before off, and when it is a Sunday, the Monday after. Banks, courts and many employers close, and many cities hold parades, concerts and cookouts.

Where Labor Day comes from

Labor Day honours the American labor movement. Several states began marking it in the 1880s, and Oregon was the first to make it a state holiday in 1887. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894, setting it on the first Monday of September, after a period of national labor unrest.

Date range

The first Monday of September can fall between September 1 and September 7. For many people it is the unofficial end of summer: schools start around it, and in the United States it is the traditional last weekend for white clothing and pool openings. Many countries mark workers' day on May 1 instead.

Banks, schools, post offices and most government offices close, and shops often run sales.

Remembering those who died in service

Memorial Day began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when graves of soldiers were decorated with flowers. In 1868 General John Logan declared May 30 as the day. It was renamed Memorial Day in the 20th century, and since 1971 it has been held on the last Monday of May under a law that moved several federal holidays to Mondays to create long weekends.

Date range

The last Monday of May falls between May 25 and May 31. The weekend is also the start of the summer season for many Americans, with parades, barbecues and travel. Flags are flown at half staff until noon. Veterans Day on November 11 honours all who served, while Memorial Day honours those who died.

A fixed date

New Year's Day is January 1. It has been the start of the year in the Roman calendar since 45 BC, when Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, and the Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, kept it. It became a federal holiday in the United States in 1870.

When January 1 is on a weekend

If January 1 is a Saturday, many United States employers give the Friday before as the day off, and if it is a Sunday, the Monday after. Some countries make the day after a holiday as well, such as Scotland, which marks January 2. Many other calendars start the year on a different date, for example the Lunar New Year in East Asia in January or February.

What Day Is Valentine's Day?

2032February 14Saturday
2033February 14Monday
2034February 14Tuesday
2035February 14Wednesday

A fixed date

Valentine's Day is February 14, so the weekday changes each year. It is named for Saint Valentine, a martyr of the early church, and became linked to romantic love in the Middle Ages, when poets such as Geoffrey Chaucer wrote of birds choosing mates in spring. Exchanging written notes grew in popularity in the 1700s and 1800s.

Planning around the weekday

It is not a public holiday, so restaurants book up fast when it falls on a weekend or a Friday. Many couples celebrate on the nearest weekend instead. Flowers and chocolate cost most in the week before, so order early. In some countries, such as Japan and South Korea, there are separate gift days one month later.

When Does Daylight Saving Time Start?

2032March 14Sunday
2033March 13Sunday
2034March 12Sunday
2035March 11Sunday

The rule

In most of the United States, daylight saving time begins at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday of March, when clocks jump to 3:00 AM. You lose an hour of sleep, but evenings are lighter. The current dates have been in force since 2007, under a federal law passed in 2005. Before that, daylight saving began in April.

Who changes the clocks

Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, and so do the US territories. Canada follows a similar rule, and most of Europe changes on the last Sunday of March. Proposals to keep one time all year have been discussed in several countries, but this page shows the rule that applies now.

Remember to change clocks that do not update on their own, such as ovens and car clocks, and check smoke detector batteries.

Indigenous Peoples' Day

Many states, cities and universities now mark Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same Monday, either instead of Columbus Day or alongside it. Whether offices, schools and banks close depends on the place and the employer. The federal holiday is still called Columbus Day, and federal offices and the Federal Reserve observe it, so check your local calendar.

How the date of Easter is found

In 325 AD the Council of Nicaea set the rule that Western Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, the spring equinox date used by the church. The full moon here is an ecclesiastical moon worked out from tables, not the astronomical moon, so the date can differ slightly from the sky. This calculator uses the standard computation (the Meeus, Jones and Butcher algorithm), which gives the dates used by Western churches.

Range

Easter can fall from March 22 to April 25. Several holidays depend on it: Ash Wednesday is 46 days before, Good Friday is two days before, and Pentecost is 49 days after. Orthodox churches calculate with the older Julian calendar, so their Easter is the same day as the Western one in some years and later in others.

The date in the United States

Father's Day in the United States is the third Sunday of June. The first modern celebration is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, who proposed it in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. It spread slowly, and President Richard Nixon signed a law making it a permanent national observance in 1972.

Date range and other countries

The third Sunday of June falls between June 15 and June 21. Many countries use the same date, including the United Kingdom and Canada. Others use different days: in Germany it is Ascension Day, in Spain and Portugal it is March 19, and in Australia and New Zealand it is the first Sunday of September.

Honoring Dr. King

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. After years of campaigning, a bill creating the holiday was signed in 1983, and it was first observed on the third Monday of January in 1986. All 50 states recognised it as a state holiday by 2000.

Date range

The third Monday of January falls between January 15 and January 21, so it is close to the birthday but is not on it. Many people mark the day with service projects, as it has been designated a national day of service. Federal offices, banks, schools and many businesses close.

The date in the United States

Mother's Day in the United States is the second Sunday of May. Anna Jarvis campaigned for a day to honour mothers after her own mother's death, and the first large observances were held in 1908. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making the second Sunday of May a national day.

Other countries

The date differs around the world. The United Kingdom marks Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which moves with Easter. Many countries use the second Sunday of May like the United States, some use a fixed date such as March 8, May 10 in Mexico, and others use local traditions. If you are sending a card or gift abroad, check the local date.

The second Sunday of May falls between May 8 and May 14.

Washington's Birthday

The federal holiday is officially called Washington's Birthday and honoured George Washington, born on February 22, 1732. A law that took effect in 1971 moved it to the third Monday of February so it would make a long weekend. The name Presidents' Day is common, and some states use it to honour other presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln, born on February 12.

Date range

The third Monday of February falls between February 15 and February 21, so it never lands on Washington's actual birthday. Federal offices, schools and banks close, and shops usually run sales for the long weekend.
