Fraction to Decimal Calculator

Turn a fraction into a decimal and a percent. Repeating digits are shown in brackets.

Quick answer: Type the top and bottom numbers to get the decimal. For example 3/8 = 0.375, 1/3 = 0.(3) and 5/6 = 0.8(3), where the digits in brackets repeat forever. The percent is shown too.

How to use it

  1. Type the top number (numerator) and the bottom number (denominator). You can add a whole number for a mixed number.
  2. The exact decimal appears. If the digits repeat, the repeating part is in brackets.
  3. The percent is shown below.

How it works

The calculator divides the top by the bottom by long division and watches for a repeating remainder. A fraction in lowest terms gives an ending decimal only if its bottom number has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. So 3/8 and 7/20 end, and 1/3 and 1/7 repeat.
